Some
people get up in the morning and go to work out of obligation or financial need. I go to work because the classroom
is the place where I see God working. The time I spend working with kids and helping them to unravel the mysteries of
reading, writing and understanding the world God made cannot be matched by any other activity. I love to teach.
It's who I am.
Jesus, who knew that he had only 3 years of ministry to accomplish so
much, took the time to spend time loving little children. He didn't wait until they were older, insist that they get
their behavior under control, or ignore them as unimportant. He chastised his disciples for sending them away,
and made time to show them the love of God. This is a challenge for our world, which sees small children as something
to put up with until they have grown a little older and have more to contribute. We must also take the time to learn
from and teach the youngest in God's kingdom.
I have been blessed with many
opportunities to share my life with young children. I have taught kindergarten in Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania
and even across the seas in West Africa. I have spent weeks around young people in Vacation Bible Schools in Jamaica
and Appalachia. And through those experiences I have been changed. I now look forward to finding out where
God would place me next to learn and grow from the students He places in my path for such a short time.
